When Mills Construction reached out about the Brookings High School science renovation, they hadn’t selected a cleaning partner yet. The final walkthrough was quickly approaching, and they were scrambling to secure a contractor who could work around a schedule that was already packed. The challenge
Late-stage renovation work rarely leaves room for a clean break between building and cleaning, and this project was no exception. Finishing crews were still on site, so a normal “everyone out, then clean” approach wasn’t an option. Mills needed a team that could clean around active work without slowing anyone down, keep the space safe and orderly for the trades still working, and come in under their blind budget.
The project site superintendent admitted he was “unsure” at first how a cleaning crew could work around his job “with all the ongoing construction.”
How we handled it
We started by learning the job’s rhythm: where the finishing crews were working, what was wrapping up next, and what had to be ready for the walkthrough. Then we built our schedule around theirs. We cleaned each area as trades moved out of it and came back for touch-ups as the last work wrapped up, so every finished space stayed clean instead of collecting dust from the next task.
Keeping in close contact with the Mills team meant we were never in anyone’s way. When plans shifted, we shifted with them. Our goal was simple: make the cleaning one less thing for the superintendent to worry about.
The result
The science renovation was clean and ready for the final walkthrough on schedule. We met Mills Construction’s blind budget, and both the owners and the contractors were satisfied with the finished space.
The site superintendent told us we were really easy to work with. The same superintendent who started out unsure said he was “impressed” with how we were able to “handle it all.”
Why it matters for your project
Final cleaning on an active job site takes more than good cleaning. It takes flexible scheduling, clear communication, and a crew that respects the work happening around it. That’s the standard we bring to every construction project, from school renovations to new commercial builds.
